Mayor Tim Kerner (Jean Lafitte, LA), Michael Roberts and Tracy Khuns of the Louisiana BayouKeepers, and Yakima Keels Black, CEO of Jefferson Community Health Care Center. On Wednesday, May 11, 2011 the new CEO of the Jefferson Community Health Care Center (JCHCC), Yakima Keels Black, visited with Jean Lafitte Mayor Tim Kerner along with representatives of the Louisiana BayouKeepers and Alliance Institute to discuss arrangements for providing health care for the residents of Jean Lafitte, Barataria, and Crowne Pointe, Louisiana.

The meeting included a tour of a proposed facility to house the clinic. Following the tour, the CEO of JCHCC commented that the space exceeded her expectations.  Both the mayor and Mrs. Black expressed excitement about the possibility of bringing the clinic to fruition.  Tracy Khuns of the Louisiana BayouKeepers was also very excited as she has been working with area residents to get access to healthcare since the BP oil disaster.

The meeting was one of several towards getting the clinic opened.  Alliance Institute has been instrumental in bringing all the partners together and shepherding the project.  The effort has been made possible with a grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

Improved Health Care Access Closer to Reality in Three Coastal Louisiana Towns

In Alliance Institute's ongoing work to bring access to health care to Barataria, Crown Point, and Lafitte, LA, the way seems to be opening for success!  After several changes, the Jefferson Community Health Care Clinic has a new CEO – Yakima Keels Black.  Mrs. Black started on February 28, 2011 and made Alliance Institute one of the first groups with whom to meet.  Following several meetings in the month of March, Mrs. Black has committed herself to working with Alliance Institute to bring the project to fruition.  We are currently in discussions toward the opening of a clinic in Lafitte that will also serve Barataria and Crown Point.

Alliance Institute Receives BP Oil Spill Grant from Greater New Orleans Foundation

Alliance Institute is the proud recipient of a grant from the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund at the Greater New Orleans Foundation (www.gnof.org). The purpose of the grant is to assist in the establishment of systems/processes for emergency health and oil clean-up training.  The grant will assist in the establishment of a health clinic to service the towns of Barataria, Crown Point and Lafitte, LA.
