In Alliance Institute's ongoing effort to increase access to health care along the Gulf Coast, two community based organizations have been chosen to head up community involvement in Mississippi and Louisiana.
BISCO (Bayou Interfaith Shared Community Organizing), based in Thibodaux, LA, will be responsible for Lafourche, Terrebonne, and Cameron Parishes.
Steps Coalition, based in Biloxi, MS, will be responsible for Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson Counties.
Both organizations bring a wealtlh of experience in economic justice and community organizing, particularly around poverty and health access issues.
A significant part of Alliance Institute’s work across the Gulf South is currently aimed at increasing the overall participation of Gulf Coast communities in the development of services for improving access to health care, improving the overall quality of community health, and changing current health center/community relations to better reflect a true partnership between physician/health center and patient/community.
